2014 Jeep Cherokee
2014 Jeep Cherokee Review

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has galvanized opinion since its release. Some cannot get used to the squinty-eyed look that leaves behind Jeep heritage, while many others have embraced the sheer modernity of the SUV.
We're in the latter camp. We can appreciate that the Jeep grille should have been retained, but we love the improvements in engine, handling, refinement and practicality. We think you will too.
The outside has brought the Jeep Cherokee kicking and screaming into the twenty first century. It has left behind that squared-off practicality in favour of a lifestyle. It's now a lifestyle SUV rather than family hauler and is all the better for it.
The division at the front softens the appearance of the Cherokee. The lower part looks a bit like a Kia, while the upper grille hint at Jeep without being too retrospective. We know the headlights have divided opinion, but we quite like them.
The rest of the exterior is all SUV. The fluted flanks, sloped roof and rounded rear all shout style without sacrificing interior space or practicality. Decent-sized alloy wheels complete the look.
On the inside, we now have a modern interior to match that exterior. The materials are better, the design is more ergonomic and the entire cabin is of a much higher quality than previous models. In fact, it's a much nicer space to inhabit than before.
Soft touch materials abound. The dashboard is fluid and well-shaped, while positioning the driver in the center of everything. Two gauges dominate the instrument cluster with a small LCD screen between them. The center stack has heating controls and an LCD screen if you opt for navigation, with the shifter underneath.
There are two engine options for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The 2.4-liter four cylinder that delivers 184 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque and a Pentastar V6 that produces a more respectable 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque.
Both are connected to a very efficient nine speed transmission that drives the front wheels. There is, of course, an all-wheel drive option for both engine types. In fact, there are three types of all-wheel drive option.
Active Drive I is for light off-roading, Active Drive II is for more serious stuff and includes a transfer case for more control. Active Drive Lock adds a lockable rear differential for when things really get rocky. Each comes with torque vectoring and traction control for five different surface conditions.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has revolutionized and revitalized a legacy brand. It's now a lifestyle SUV with off-road credentials it can actually deliver upon.
