The future of Canada is Electric. Are you ready?
The future of Canada is Electric! The news has been full of stories lately about Canada’s role in the next stage of Electric Vehicle production.
Moves are already being made by the major manufacturers to shift production to electric vehicles and Canada is front and center. Stellantis, the Provincial Government, and the Federal Government have committed to investing in existing facilities in Ontario to upgrade them to support EV production. Ford Motor Company of Canada has received a similar investment from the Government of Canada for their Oakville Assembly Complex.
Canada has critical resources needed to make the batteries used in EVs and as mentioned above, facilities already used for vehicle production. This is excellent for the Canadian manufacturing, mining, and even recycling sectors. There is a potential for an increase of up to 50% in jobs associated with EVs.
Battery production in Canada requires a strong supply chain. The raw materials are located in remote locations, so there is a team comprised of members of the provincial, territorial, and federal governments working to create a battery value chain. This will also create new job opportunities and only add to the appeal of making EV battery manufacturing in Canada a priority.
The switch from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs is real, and it’s coming soon. Every major auto maker has committed to switching to fully electric vehicle production in the timelines set out by governments worldwide. The question is no longer if you will be a part of the change, but when.
When battery production becomes localized, and the cost of transport decreases, and overall vehicle production increases, and charging stations are more readily available, purchasing an EV will be more affordable and practical for everyone.
Projects are in the works across the country to make vehicle charging more available along highways as well, removing another barrier to EV driving. The fear of running out of battery charge in the middle of a long trip is enough to make even the most adventurous driver wary. Technology is advancing every day, so by the time 2035 comes along, the range of EVs will be far greater than today.
It’s an incredibly exciting time for the car industry in this country, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
