The Canadian government has set a goal of having a green economy by 2035

By 2025, the government of Canada plans to have 100% of car and passenger truck sales be zero-emission to achieve this goal.
The Government of Canada is taking action to reduce pollution from all sectors of the economy — including transportation, which accounts for one-quarter of our greenhouse gas emissions.
Transport Minister the Honourable Omar Alghabra, Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, and Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault announced that Canada will set a mandatory target for all new light-duty vehicles and passenger trucks sales to be zero-emission by 2035, speeding up Canada's previous objective of 100 percent purchases by 2040.
To reach this goal, the federal government will use a combination of investments and regulations to assist Canadians and businesses in transitioning to 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035. It will also collaborate with partners on interim 2025 and 2030 targets and possible further mandatory measures that may be required beyond Canada's light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards.
In addition to the existing measures supporting increased adoption of zero-emission vehicles, today's announcement provides additional incentives for purchasing these types of vehicles. These include investments in charging infrastructure and partnerships with auto manufacturers to produce zero-emission vehicles domestically. Combined, these actions will help Canada meet its goal of 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2050 and achieve a prosperous net-zero emissions economy.
The Government of Canada, in collaboration with the United States government, continues to pursue a strategy that would align with the most stringent light-duty vehicle carbon emissions standards in the United States. Supporting a robust and unified North American automotive sector as it transitions to zero-emission vehicles contributes to Canada's climate change targets, while also allowing Canadian and US workers alike to profit economically from this global shift.
