How to Sell your Car Quickly & for the Most Money

How to Sell your Car Quickly & for the Most Money

Selling a car is a big deal. It’s a lot of money, cars are important in our lives and there’s a lot at stake. Whether you’re planning to sell your car quickly to a dealership or sell it privately, planning is key.

That’s what we’re covering today.

We have put together what we think is the perfect plan to help you sell your car quickly and for the most money.

Make sure you’re ready to sell

Some of us are emotionally connected to our cars. While we may think it’s a good idea to sell it and buy a newer or better model, we need to be emotionally prepared for that.

It’s best to get that out of the way nice and early. You’ll be doing a lot of work to prepare your car for sale and it would be easier to know why you’re doing it from the very beginning.

Prepare the car for sale

However you’re planning to sell the car, you need to prepare it for sale. That means looking at your car through the eyes of a buyer and correcting any obvious issues.

Give the car a good clean inside and out. Assess the bodywork, tires, windshield, lights, interior and trunk. Identify any areas that let the car down and do something about them.

Don’t spend too much money but spend wisely. If something would impact your desire to buy that car, fix it. If something would be noticeable but wouldn’t necessarily change someone’s mind, leave it.

Prepare your paperwork

Next, prepare your car’s paperwork ready for the sale. You’ll need the title and any official paperwork required in your province. You’ll also need the service record and any receipts for maintenance or repairs you still have.

While it’s a bit late now, it’s always a good idea to keep as much paperwork as you can for your car. It helps build a picture of how the car was looked after and cared for while you had it.

It may not make the car more valuable but it will make it more desirable.

A car with a full service history and all its paperwork is more in demand than one without!

Arrange your auto loan

If you’re planning to buy a car after you sell this one, now would be a good time to arrange finance. You don’t have to do this now, you could wait until after, but as you’re planning for the transition, now is as good a time as any.

If you’re planning to do without this car for a little while, skip this step.

Otherwise, get your finances in order, check your credit score, research auto loan rates and do as much research as you can.

Get your car appraised or valued

Whether you’re selling your car to a dealership or selling it privately, you need to know its value.

We tend to recommend checking a few sources for values to get a good idea. Check your exact make, model, year and trim.

Check Carfax, Kelley Blue Book, Auto Trader, eBay, Craigslist and Kijiji. Check anywhere else you know of that sells car.

Always make sure to check the same model of car as even a small difference can provide different values.

If you’re planning to sell to a dealership, you can now make an appointment to have it appraised. As you have a good idea of its value, you’ll know whether our offer is fair or not.

If you’re selling privately, now is the time to take pictures, write the ad and list it somewhere.
